چکیده

The reverence with which the average Hindu regards a snake is well known. In the Hindu mythology, Shesh Nag is believed to have protected God Brahma, and God Shiva gave the mark of Omega on the hood of the cobra. Shiva is depicted with snakes coiling around his neck and a snake emerging from the tuft of his hair. The snake is an emblem of the mystery of death, as well as of healing. Nerve growth factor from cobra venom.

The chemical and biological properties of the nerve growth factor isolated from Naja naja venom are described. The nerve growth promoting activity appears to be distinct from the most commonly known enzymes and toxins present in the venom. The purified nerve growth factor from cobra venom has properties remarkably similar to those of the nerve growth factor isolated from mouse submaxillary glan...

CHARACTERIZATION OF AN ANTICOAGULANT AGENT IN THE VENOM OF IRANIAN COBRA (NAJA NAJA OXIANA).

Snake venoms contain a rich variety of factors which affect blood coagulation. There have been few reports on the anticoagulant activity of the venom of different cobras, but no such observations have been made on the Iranian cobra, although a procoagulant factor has been described. In this study an anticoagulant factor has been purified from the venom of Naja naja oxiana using gel filtrat...

Production of effective antivenin to treat cobra snake

Conventional treatment of Naja naja oxiana (NNO) envenoming requires large volumes of equine antivenin raised against NNO crude venom. The poor efficiency of this antivenin is assumed to be due to the high molecular weight non-toxic proteins, a strong immunogen, present in the crude venom. These proteins cause depression of antibody formation against the low molecular weight toxic components of...

First Look at the Venom of Naja ashei.

Naja ashei is an African spitting cobra species closely related to N. mossambica and N. nigricollis. It is known that the venom of N. ashei, like that of other African spitting cobras, mainly has cytotoxic effects, however data about its specific protein composition are not yet available. Thus, an attempt was made to determine the venom proteome of N. ashei with the use of 2-D electrophoresis a...
